About Emily

My Teaching Background

In 2017 I started teaching voice at “Living Music,” where I met many talented musicians with a love of learning.

Inspired by this experience, I began teaching at multiple primary schools across Melbourne (including Ashburton primary school, Coburg primary school and Camberwell primary school).

In 2018, I started working with children on the spectrum to support their needs through music based learning with the NDIS.

In the same year, I also opened my own private studio offering voice, cello, guitar, songwriting and music theory sessions for people with a passion and curiosity for music.

I enjoy the challenge of connecting with people of all ages and pinpointing what it is that they love about music and implementing an individualistic learning approach.

In these sessions, I design a program tailored to your personal learning goals with the instrument of your choice and suggest beneficial methods to help you reach your desired outcome. With every session, we will reflect on how you are feeling holistically, how this feeds into the program and if necessary, adjust the program to best assist you on your musical journey...

My Musical Background

Early Years

My musical journey began at the age of 6 when I started learning cello. I studied both Suzuki and AMEB methods, which helped me develop strong aural skills and the capacity to memorise large volumes of music.

I have always been interested in the mechanics of music and have spent much of my time learning music theory; to enhance my understanding of things I could hear and feel.

After training in cello for a few years, I decided to expand my instrument repertoire leading me to guitar and voice.

Once I had attained these skills, I started to experiment with songwriting and recording as a creative outlet.

I was also encouraged to pursue Jazz music by my then singing teacher and mentor Ainslie Wills .

Through exploring the genre, I fell in love with the improvisational element and the beautiful harmonic layers throughout Jazz standards. This led me to pursue my present study of Jazz improvisation at VCA, which has informed much of the music I write and play today.

I have a Police Check and Working with Children’s Check.
